Doesn't sound like much, but you can kill those 36 monsters faster than anything else in the game and it takes a matter of seconds to run past there. Use the wind skill, they all go down in a hit.

I don't know of a specific recommended level, but in general, in the Ys games, if you're doing too little damage, go and make sure your weapons are adequately upgraded at the blacksmith, and maybe gain a level or two.
