Milled BP is sort of the standard. I personally don't believe a ball mill is NECESSARILY required for hot BP, but something of a comparable speed is required.

If you can barricade it that's even better (things like sandbags). Just make sure you don't block off air to the motor. When making black powder there is always a chance for it to go off.

WEBSep 10, 2012 · A couple helps are: Use a larger ball mill jar with a properly loaded media level. You should be able to reduce charcoal flakes to airfloat in 30 minutes. Use hard media, lead is just too soft to do a good job reducing charcoal to airfloat, it is good however at breaking down chunks to 80 mesh.

Most of the pieces are very close and pieces are not thrown much more than 15 feet for a 1 gallon jar and, I believe, a kilo of finished commercial powder. WEBOct 20, 2012 · To prevent your motor from burning out I would recommend 23lb's lead and 150200g composition per jar. I personally use just over 2Lb's lead and 200g composition with a 1" drive roller in my 3Lb jars on these mills. PERFECT black powder in 2023 hours. With 150g composition in the mill it's perfect in around 14 hours.

WEBI have been using the .50 cal lead balls for years never had an issue with contamination in my BP. In a small drum ball mill [like the Harbor Freight 1 2 drum models] you really aren't doing a lot of damage in the tumbling process since it is such a small drum and doesn't require a very long run time per batch of BP.
